ABOUT OUR DOULA

Hello! My name is Alyssa Eldridge. I began training as a doula through Childbirth International in 2013 and have continued my education since then by reading a wide range of birth books, talking to experienced doulas, and listening to birth stories. My favorite birth video can be found here.

My family consists of my husband, our two children, and our two dogs (a Siberian Husky and an Australian Shepherd). We live in the outskirts of Willard where a family of deer regularly browses our garden.

WHAT IS A DOULA?

A doula is trained to provide support to families during pregnancy, labor, birth, and the early postpartum period. A doula does not provide medical care but instead supports you in making your own decisions. Your doula can help you write your birth plan, research your options, and communicate your desires with medical staff. If you are planning a "natural" birth and wish to avoid pain medication, a doula can help you ease any discomfort you experience. Doulas are known for hip squeezes, massages, suggesting position changes, setting a peaceful tone in the room, and helping you stay calm and focused.

A doula does not replace your birth partner but instead provides complimentary support. When your partner needs a break your doula will be with you while they take care of themselves. Your doula can show your partner how to help you and suggest new comfort measures to try. With a doula present, the pressure to support you in labor is taken off your partner and they are able to be as involved with the birth as they feel comfortable.

Those who have a doula present are more likely to:

  • have shorter labors.

  • say they have an "easy" baby.

  • report the relationship with their partner is better after having the baby.

  • breastfeed exclusively at 6 weeks.

  • feel like they are a good mom.

Those who have a doula present are less likely to:

  • require interventions during labor.

  • request pain medication.

  • show signs of anxiety or depression.

We provide professional labor support without judgment or a personal agenda.
